The "Falcon Table Lamp" by Eichholtz pays tribute to a bronze falcon (ca. 1200–1220) forged in southern Italy and now in the collection of The Cloisters, The Met's location dedicated to the art and architecture of the Middle Ages.

This skillfully cast figure has been associated with the Hohenstaufen emperors, a Germanic dynasty ruling over territories belonging to modern-day Germany and Italy. This proud avian likeness, which perhaps decorated a throne or the top of a tent pole, is reimagined as the base of this lamp, crowned with a linen-mix shade handmade in the Netherlands.

HISTORIC PROVENANCE

The Table Lamp Falcon takes its form from a southern Italian cast-bronze falcon that dates to the 13th century and is said to have been found in Italy in 1925. Now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this falcon has been associated with the Germanic dynasty of Hohenstaufen emperors, who ruled over much of what are now Germany and Italy. While the emperors were known to carry staffs with eagles on top of them, this sculptureis thought to have decorated a throne or other piece of furniture. It appears to specifically depict a gerfalcon, which suggests a connection to Emperor Frederick II, who wrote about the aristocratic art of falconry and pursed it as a sport. The Table Lamp Falcon has been precisely crafted with a copper-bronze finish and a linen-mix shade handcrafted in the Netherlands.

Care Instructions

How to care for lighting with a metallic finish and glass or acrylic

To maintain the beauty of your luxury lighting, we recommend the following simple guidelines. When cleaning a lamp, make sure you unplug the power cord first. Always make sure sprays or liquids can not get in the lamp fittings.

Cleaning & Maintenance

For general maintenance, periodically dust off your lighting with a feather duster or a soft clean cloth, preferably weekly.

Metallic finishes

Use lukewarm water with a mild household detergent to clean metal finishes. Gently wipe the metallic surfaces, rods and parts with a soft, dampened cloth or chamois. Dry well with a clean, soft cloth. Never use cleaners with ammonia, bleach or hard chemicals and avoid paper towels or scouring pads.

Glass

Never use abrasive materials for cleaning glass as they may cause scratches. Use appropriate glass cleaning solutions and a microfiber cloth. If you are using a chemical cleaner, take care not to spill it on any of the surrounding metallic finishes. After drying with a soft cloth, you can use a piece of crumpled newspaper to give the glass added shine and sparkle.

Acrylic

Avoid commercial household cleaners because the chemicals in these products can dull and craze the acrylic. The best way to care for acrylic surfaces, rods and parts, is to clean with lukewarm water and a bit of liquid soap. Rinse with clear water and dry well. Always use soft cloths for cleaning as not to scratch the acrylic.
